INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON ATATÜRK & TURKISH INDEPENDENCE

ON THE CENTENARY OF MAY 19th, 1919

15-18 MAY 2019 - ANKARA

 

2019 being the centennial of the day in which Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk set foot on Samsun to start the National Struggle an international symposium themed “ATATURK and TURKISH INDEPENDENCE ON THE CENTENARY OF MAY 19th, 1919” will be held in Ankara, Hacettepe University on May 15-18, organized by Atatürk Institute, Hacettepe University and Anıtkabir Association.

 

Moving with the fact that Mustafa Kemal Pasha, who had been assigned as the 9. Army Inspector, had started a process which later formed a basis for the rise of the new Turkish state setting out from Istanbul on May 16th, 1919 with the steamer SS Bandırma and setting foot on Samsun on May 19th,1919. In this symposium effects of this process for the Turkish War of Independence and the birth of the Turkish Republic will be discussed regarding the domestic and foreign conditions of the era.

 

It is planned that topics including the World War I, developments during the armistice period, the occupation of the lands of the Ottoman Empire, responses against the occupation, the solutions for independence discussed by highbrows, peace talks, organization of the National Struggle, congresses held, the National Oath, military, political, social and economic developments of the Turkish National Struggle, establishment and activities of Turkish Grand National Assembly, the idea of full independence independence and reflections from the spirit of the Turkish revolutionaries, that is “the national forces” to the present will be discussed and approached relying on the papers of the recent findings and comments.

 

Submitted papers that will be sent accordingly with the themes of the symposium should be based on the archival documents or/and new comments.

 

 At selection of submitted papers, it is given priority to the topics that would include the following titles. Apart from these main titles, papers which include new theories, approaches, perspectives and comments addressed to the settlement of issues and original findings will also be evaluated.

  •         Establishment, Structure & Activities of the Turkish Grand National Assembly
  •         The National Struggle from military, political, social and economic Aspects
  •         The Idea of Full Independence and the Spirit of the National Struggle


We would be pleased to see the participation of researchers and scholars with their academic studies based on recent information, documents and evaluations in the fields indicated above. 

It is essential to participate in the symposium with paper presentations. Scholars who wish to participate in the symposium should send their abstracts (300 words at least) as well as their affiliations and publication lists to 19mayissempozyumu@gmail.com until January 18th, 2019 with the filled application forms. A second announcement concerning the accepted papers will be made following the evaluation of the abstracts submitted by the Scientific Committee.

 

Expenses of accommodation and transportation of paper owners will be covered by the organizing institutions.

TERMS OF PARTICIPATION IN THE SYMPOSIUM

 

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION AND EVALUATION

The symposium is open to the participation of scholars and researchers from Turkey and abroad. For this purpose, the abstracts, methods, resources and possible findings containing the 300-word abstracts should be sent to 19mayissempozyumu@gmail.com until January 18, 2019 as an attached file. Submitted abstracts will be evaluated by the members of the Scientific Committee; taking into account the symposium topics, compliance with scientific requirements and the authenticity of the study. The evaluations made by the members of the committee will be in the form of acceptance/correction/rejection. The accepted papers will be announced on February 18,2019.

 

FULL PAPER SUBMISSION

Full texts of the accepted papers should be sent to 19mayissempozyumu@gmail.com as an attached Word file in accordance with the spelling rules until April 14,2019. The papers which are sent as a full text will be analyses by the Organizing Committee in terms of compliance with the scientific requirements and abstracts and will be included in the symposium program.

 

SPELLING RULES

  1. In the study, the title should be capitalized with bold capitals, just below the author’s name and surname. There should be the academic title, institution and e-mail adress in this specified order in the explanation footnote that will be placed under the page.
  2. After the title and author name, a summary of 10 points-100 words- should be included in Turkish and English. The title should be given also in English. English and Turkish key words should be added.
  3. The character should be Times New Roman and the font size should be 12. The point size of the tables, footnotes and resources should have a font size of 10.
  4. The work must be in (.doc) or (.docx) format. In the page layout, it is required that there is 2,5 cm space from the bottom, top, right and left; 1,25 cm space should be provided for the sub-information and information.
  5.  Paragraphs should not have line gaps; indentation: 0 cm, space: first 6 pt - after 6 pt and the line gap should be one line.
  6.  References should be given in footnotes. The name and surname of the author, the title of the book (bold capitals) - the name of the article in quotation and the journal in which the article is published should be given in the order of publisher, publication place, date, number. The sources used should be put in an alphabetical order at the end of the text in the same format as the footnotes.
  7. Tables and graphs should be numbered separately; just below the table or graph, the source should be specified in 10 pt.
  8. Original documents, pictures, maps and similar images not directly related to the text should not be included in the text unless necessary; should be numbered and attached at the end of the pictures if necessary. High-resolution images should also be sent in a CD.
  9. The papers should be limited to 5-10 thousand words.
